Silver medal for top tapper
A tip top tap dancer from Petersfield has returned home with a silver medal from the world championships in Germany.
Imogen Weatherhead (16), of Noreuil Road, was part of the England formation class team which missed out on gold by a single point.
The talented teen performed strongly in the individual competition, winning through the qualifying round and quarter-finals before getting eliminated in the semis, finishing in a creditable 11th place overall.
In total the England team won two gold medals, three silvers, two bronze medals and 11 trophies at the championships, which were held in Reisa, near Dresden.
Imogen said: “It was amazing, the thrill you get afterwards from performing was incredible. “I am not really someone to get nervous but on the day they just started building and building. “There was a big audience in the auditorium and a screen was set up for a live feed for people to watch around the world, so my mum could watch it back home!”
Imogen explained the England formation team was made up of 22 tap dancers who danced to the song ‘Drill’ by Michael Jackson.
The judges climbed to the balcony to watch their performance, which was recorded by a camera positioned above the stage, to assess the formation.
England were narrowly beaten by the US for the title. Imogen said: “There were dancers from lots of countries there and we all made friends with them. “We have been keeping touch through Facebook.”
